If you lease space in a datacenter but your team is not on-site, you rely on someone else to be your hands on the floor. Providers usually split that work into two tiers: remote hands and smart hands. The terms get used loosely, so here is how we define them and when each one applies.
Remote hands: the routine, physical work
Remote hands covers the straightforward, physical tasks that do not require deep knowledge of your systems. It is task-driven work you can describe in a sentence or two:
- Power-cycling a server, PDU, or switch
- Reseating cables, optics, or drives
- Basic rack and stack: mounting equipment, connecting power and network
- Cable and cross-connect runs, labeling, and cleanup
- Checking a status light, reading a display, or describing what you see
- Receiving, unboxing, and inventorying shipments; packing gear for return
Remote hands is billed at our lower tier because it is procedural: you tell us exactly what to do, and we do it.
Smart hands: the skilled, judgment work
Smart hands (sometimes called our advanced tier) covers tasks that need technical skill, tools, or troubleshooting judgment. Typical examples:
- Configuring a switch, router, or firewall to your provided config
- Console or serial access to recover a device you are locked out of
- Hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics on servers or network gear
- Firmware or OS installation and repair
- Fiber optic inspection, cleaning, and testing
Smart hands takes more time and expertise, so it is billed at the higher tier. The line is not always sharp; a single visit can include both, and we bill each portion accordingly.
How to decide which you need
A quick test: if you can write the exact steps and any technician could follow them, it is remote hands. If it requires interpreting results, making decisions, or knowing how your equipment works, it is smart hands. When in doubt, describe the goal and we will tell you which tier applies before we start.
Why it matters for your bill
Because the two tiers are priced differently, scoping the work correctly keeps costs predictable. Clear instructions and any relevant diagrams or configs let us complete more of the job at the remote-hands rate. See our pricing page for current rates, or tell us the task and we will confirm the tier and a projected cost up front.
